If you’ve never been to our practice before, here are two easy routes you could take from Tacoma: 

 

1. Take Pacific Ave south, then head one exit east on the I-5. Exit onto Pioneer Way heading south, and follow the curves and bends to the intersection with 72nd St and Woodland. Head south on Woodland Ave. Turn left onto 160th St. Right after the intersection with Meridian, our building is the first one on the right. Turn in and come around back for parking. We’re at 16021 Meridian E.
2. Alternatively, you could head west and south on the I-5, then exit and head east on WA-512. Exit and turn right when you pass Costco, and head south on 94th Ave. Turn left onto 152nd St, then right onto Meridian. Turn left onto 16th St, then immediately turn right to come around our building.

The History of Tacoma’s Name

Tacoma owes its name to Mount Rainier, which was originally called “Tacobet” by the local Indigenous people. City founder Job Carr chose the name “Tacoma” to honor that origin, but the city would also come to be known by a more dramatic nickname: the “City of Destiny.” This enduring title was popularized in the 1870s by one of the city’s most eccentric early supporters, George Francis Train.

 

Train was a wealthy and well-known figure in his time, born into a family of shipbuilders and famed for his flamboyant personality. A self-styled poet, philosopher, and world traveler, he arrived in Tacoma in 1869 and quickly became enchanted with the city. Declaring it destined for greatness, Train promoted Tacoma relentlessly in his syndicated newspaper column, “Train’s Vander-Billion Psychos.”

 

At the time, the Northern Pacific Railroad was deciding where to locate its western terminus. With so much at stake — including jobs, industry, and access to telegraph lines — Seattle was a fierce competitor. But Tacoma won the bid, and Train proudly claimed responsibility for the outcome, famously declaring, “I made Tacoma the City of Destiny.”
